Maybe you’re heard because I won’t shut up about it but the first book of my graphic novel called SAM THE JUNK is getting ready to drrrrrrrrop. I’m launching a campaign on IndieGoGo this upcoming Monday ( 9/18 ) to fund the printing and you can make a contribution to get the book and other fun stuff if you’d like.

This is a super exciting time for me, and I hope you’ll get excited too. I’m sending excitement vibes to you over this email. Like groovy vibes. I don’t know what that means.

Anyway, if you’ve followed my art for a while and followed what I’ve been doing, you’ll probably know I’ve been working on this book for a really long time. I kinda can’t believe I’m now releasing something and already working on the second book.

I made a trailer. It’s 1.5 minutes long. One thing I learned during the process of making a trailer is that video editing takes a lot of time. I mean A LOT of time. Please watch this video or I’ll get sad.

I’m driving east while the sun is rising and I’m driving west while it’s setting, so it’s directly in my eyes the whole time. On the way back, squinting, the only thing I’m thinking about is how much fried chicken I want to eat because that’s how I get when I’m tired and cranky.

And since I’m tired and I’m listening to sad bastard music on the stereo; business-wise, I don’t know if it makes a lot of sense. Morganton is a 60 mile drive. Adjusted for time, cost of materials and other expenses I’m probably making about $10 a hour. Isn’t that less than minimum wage in some places?

Later - with a belly full of fried chicken I thought about the day and how it was very much like an early spring outside. And how I drove with the windows down most of the time and there were daffodils everywhere I looked.

I painted this in Morganton

I met someone who told me about all the ghosts she has seen, including a ghost horse. She was wheeling a dog around in a baby stroller. I would have never known of the existence of this person if I had stayed home.

I got two newsletter sign ups, and someone wanted to know when the painting I was doing would be for sale. Neither of those things happen while I’m painting alone in the studio.

In comparison: this past Saturday I ate a shameful amount of pizza and played video games most of the day.

Which one of these is a better use of my time do you think?

If you said the first one, we’re in agreement.

Yes, it would have been nice to sell $40,000 worth of art in Morganton that weekend, but I didn’t and it was pretty nice anyway.

On 3/2, I was on a show called “Dreamers and Doers” with Carol Anders. We talked about a lot of things and I think it was a good conversation about lowbrow art. She kept having to tell me to get closer to the mic, and eventually I think I got it.

but I didn’t sell a lot of stuff. I don’t know if people have a whole lot of extra money right now - especially the young ones. Some go by the NASDAQ to see about the state of the economy. I go by cage free egg prices; and they’re $7 a dozen right now.

I did meet some nice neighbors, and I painted a new painting.

Before I left town with my hair blowing in the wind I went by my parents’ house for a minute and helped my step mom do a 23 and me because she hates the internet.

While we were getting that sorted there was this show on TV about pets, and there was a story about a dog who imitated its owner’s injury out of empathy.

There’s a local radio show on AVL FM called “dreamers & doers” and I’m going to be on that show this Thursday (3/2) at 9am. I’ll probably go on tangents. I’ll probably seem weird. I’m going to try not to curse.

I’ll be at the Hickory Comic Con today at the METRO Center. I’ll be doing a live painting demo of something and I’ll be in a super mood because I like doing shows.

I am Iron Man

I have mixed feelings about Hickory, and if you grew up there you would too.

On one hand, I love a lot of people that I know there. I grew up with a pretty tight crew of weirdos. Towns like Hickory tend to have this. Little packs of underground people, into heavy music, into art ( and probably into comics ).

On the other hand - Hickory feels like the suburbs ate a crackhouse and pooped out a preppy cocaine-addicted religious fanatic that loves sports and cheating on their spouse in the woods. Shout out Hickory people - you know what I’m saying. Applebees. Meth. Church.

I hung out in the Hardees parking when I was in high school with my best friends - the bass player and the drummer. We smoked pot and listened to dirty metal and noisy punk. Maybe we threw up sometimes. Maybe we dreamed about going on tour. Maybe we ate fried chicken.

We laughed a lot. It really wasn’t so bad.

Now that I’m a grown up ( LOL ), I don’t mind going because I can remember the friends I love and sometimes they come to the show and we can hug and tell each other how old we are now. And then once I’m done I can pack up the car and head out of there.

Ok, time to pack the car.

It’s cold outside, but we’ll be fine.

Live painting & sculpting

I worked on this episode recently on the Twitch live stream. We stream on twitch every Wednesday at 6pm - 9pm. It makes it a lot more fun when people are hanging out in the chat. I answer questions about the process but also tell silly stories and talk about pop culture stuff.

I freak out

I wake up in the morning with anxiety. It’s probably because I immediately start slurping coffee and thinking about how many balls I’m sometimes juggling. It’s not great.

I’m trying to work on it by starting a morning routine.

  1. Eating a decent breakfast soon after waking up. This is counter to what I’ve done my whole life but from what I read it helps to lower cortisol levels after not eating all night. I do find that I’m a little shaky in the mornings. When I say decent I mean eggs, yogurt, nuts, beef jerky, blueberries - stuff like that.

  2. I ordered some decaf coffee from Amazon for first thing in the morning. I’ll have to get over my bias of decaf coffee, but I’m going to give it a try. This is what I ordered. I’ll probably switch to caffeinated a little later in the morning but start with this.

  3. Instead of jumping out of bed and panicking about all the spinning plates, I’m trying to not put pressure on myself to do or think about anything for the first hour or so of the day. You have to wake up pretty early to make this work. I meditate and walk a little bit on the stair stepper and then take a shower.

  4. Drink water

  5. try not to freak out

I saw this video recently that I think you might enjoy. Especially if your brain is sometimes very loud like mine.

This year I’m going in a different direction. This year my goal is to have a reason to take a shower. And I’m looking forward to losing all the weight that I gained.

Hello - I have some great news. I have obtained complete enlightenment. I have achieved the patience of mother nature. I am no longer haunted by perfectionism and I am totally chill about everything.

I used the video up there as reference to make a panel for Sam the Junk. It’s a good thing that I have obtained enlightenment because this panel took me 3.5 years to complete.

My new studio is all set up and it has a big ole floor AC that blows directly onto me when I’m working. You can see it under the desk in this shot.

I’m very ready for Fall. The air smells good. Is that weird to say?

This heat is too much. Over the last month or so if I don’t go for a walk before 7am it’s not happening. From my window it looks fine - almost inviting. Sunny, birds chirping. But the second I walk out my front door I say ‘nope’ (out loud) and walk back in.

Jackie’s Head

Last time I was talking about how Jackie was too looking different in every panel of Sam the Junk (my comic) and my perfectionism was not allowing it.

I painted a turn around of the character and then made a 3d model of her head.

Round and round forever and ever

I don’t spend too much time worrying about the details, I just want the features to be in the right place and to have the big shapes consistent.

Life Drawing

I’ve started going back to life drawing sessions after not going for 18 months. I’ve was doing a lot of online study, but it’s not the same as in person.

I’m a little rusty in some ways, and I think I’ve improved in others. I’m hoping that the thousands of hours of reading boring anatomy books and making millions of bad drawings have been paying off at least a little.

I had to take a couple weeks off from the stream this month, but now we’re back to working on our B-movie monster. Last week we did a rough layout for the poster and continued to work on the sculpture for our pose.

The current draft for our b-movie is:

Scientist Dr. Sal Reynolds is demoted for doing dumb experiments like that baking soda / vinegar volcano on his company’s dime. His new department is at his corporation’s dumping ground in rural Ohio. On his first day he falls into a trash hole and accidentally unearths some kind of seagull mutant or something. It’s tired of living off garbage and wants to eat people.

Why don’t mutants ever want to just chill and not eat people?

Sam the Junk 1.1

The comic is coming along slowly, but I’ve had to take a small detour to try and figure out how to draw people the same way every time.

I already have a 3d dummy head for Sam. It’s not perfect, but I can turn it and place it however I want, and it seems to work pretty well for reference and painting over. It helps me make her look roughly the same every time.

Jackie started out looking one way and then I drew her another way and now I’m confused and my perfectionism is making me crazy.

I’m really trying hard to work on my perfectionism, but when something like this happens I’m looking at the older pages and sweating the fact that they don’t match.

It takes a long time to do these heads, but I think it’s going to be worth it in the end. Once I do it once I have it and I won’t keep going back to drive myself up a wall with inconsistent characters faces.

Maybe next time I’ll have Jackie’s face modeled in 3d and I’ll post it.

So far the lore is something like a seagull that was mutated from eating toxic garbage.

During the stream I brought up something about eyebrows that I regret.

I forgot to tell you about the Veronica from Heathers painting we did for Fan Art Fwednesday a while back. This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I recently watched it and it holds up.

The latest painting we did was a portrait of the Philadelphia Flyers mascot Gritty inspired by everyone’s hero portrait painter John Singer Sargent.

Next

We’re going to be doing a classic monster movie poster over the next few weeks. I’m really excited about this one. First, we’re going to come up with some household objects and spin the wheel and incorporate a few into the costume. Then we’re going to do a character design. Then we’re going to design a movie poster around all of this. It’s going to be super fun.
